Recreational Weed Laws In New York
New York passed the Compassionate Care Act in 2014 and has since then decriminalized the possession and consumption of marijuana, weed, for recreational purposes. This means, that you will no longer face the risk of jail as long as you're carrying less than two ounces of weed.
For possessions of less than 2 ounces of marijuana, this is considered to be a violation but not a crime. If you're caught, you will receive a fine varying between $50 to $200 depending on the amount of weed you're carrying.
Most of the past convictions for marijuana of 25 grams or less will automatically be expunged.
Marijuana is added to the definition of smoking in the Public Health Law, so you won't be able to smoke weed where smoking tobacco is prohibited.
Despite all of these changes, the fight for legal marijuana in New York State continues.
